Cubs Win Back-to-Back World Series Titles in 1908

Cubs Win Back-to-Back World Series Titles in 1908

On October 14, 1908, the Chicago Cubs finished a second consecutive World Series championship by defeating the Detroit Tigers 2–0 at Bennett Park. Orval Overall pitched the shutout, and Chicago completed a four-games-to-one series win. At the time, the result confirmed a powerful team. Only later would it become the starting point of a famous wait.

The Cubs scored in the first inning when Frank Chance's single brought Johnny Evers home. They added another run in the fifth, giving Overall a small cushion rather than an overwhelming one. Detroit still had opportunities, including a first-inning threat that left the bases loaded, but could not turn a runner into a run.

Overall's opening inning contained an unusual statistical wrinkle. He struck out four batters because one reached first after an uncaught third strike. An inning still needs only three outs; a strikeout does not always supply one. The sequence illustrates why baseball's records sometimes require looking beyond the most familiar shorthand.

For Chicago, the decisive game brought together the traits of a championship club: timely hits, dependable pitching and the ability to close an opponent's best openings. The Cubs had beaten Detroit for the title in 1907 as well. Repeating the achievement made their place among the era's strongest teams clear.

The date later acquired a meaning nobody at Bennett Park could have predicted. Chicago did not win another World Series until 2016. That long gap made the 1908 team a reference point for generations of supporters who had never seen it play. October 14 remembers the victory first: a shutout, a finished Series, and a championship celebrated before anyone knew how long the next one would take.
