Hank Aaron Hits His 715th Home Run

Hank Aaron Hits His 715th Home Run

On April 8, 1974, Hank Aaron stepped to the plate in the fourth inning at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium with the baseball world watching. Four days earlier, he had tied Babe Ruth’s career home run record at 714. Facing Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Al Downing, Aaron drove a pitch over the left-field wall and into the Braves’ bullpen. His 715th home run gave him sole possession of the major league career record.

The moment came in Aaron’s first home game of the season and only his fourth appearance of 1974. The Braves had started their schedule in Cincinnati, where Aaron hit the home run that matched Ruth. His next chance to pass Ruth came in front of a packed Atlanta crowd, with millions more following on television. The shot was a two-run homer that tied the game; Atlanta went on to win, 7–4.

Aaron’s achievement capped years of steady excellence. He had finished the previous season at 713, just one short of Ruth, and had spent the winter enduring racist threats and abuse as attention around the record intensified. He handled the pursuit with remarkable composure, while continuing to produce at the highest level. Aaron ultimately finished his career with 755 home runs, setting a mark that stood until 2007.

Fans remember No. 715 both as a landmark in baseball’s record book and as a testament to Aaron’s sustained skill and resolve. The home run challenged the sport’s most famous standard while placing Aaron, whose career included extraordinary consistency and dignity under pressure, at the center of baseball history.
