Walter Payton Passes Jim Brown's NFL Rushing Record

Walter Payton Passes Jim Brown's NFL Rushing Record

On Oct. 7, 1984, Walter Payton passed Jim Brown to become the NFL's career rushing leader. The Chicago Bears running back reached the milestone at Soldier Field against the New Orleans Saints, moving beyond Brown's benchmark of 12,312 yards in a 20-7 Chicago win.

The record-breaking carry came in the third quarter. Payton took a pitch to his left and gained six yards, a modest advance that carried a much larger meaning. Career rushing records accumulate through thousands of attempts, so the decisive play did not need to be a spectacular long run. It was another productive carry in a career built on finding yards.

Payton kept producing after the milestone. He finished the afternoon with 154 rushing yards on 32 carries and scored a touchdown, helping Chicago secure the victory. The game offered a useful measure of his contribution: the carry that entered the record book was only one part of a full afternoon's work. The Bears still needed their running back to move the ball and help finish the game.

Brown's total carried weight because he set it in only nine seasons before retiring. Payton's achievement reflected a career built on consistency: he played all 13 of his NFL seasons for Chicago and kept adding to the total after Oct. 7. He retired in 1987 with 16,726 rushing yards, then the league's career record. Emmitt Smith passed that total in 2002.

The afternoon joined an individual milestone to a team win. Payton's record run was a six-yard gain, but it ended the chase of one of football's celebrated marks. One well-blocked carry moved the league's career rushing record into a new era.
