On October 24, 1992, the World Series championship crossed into Canada for the first time. The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Atlanta Braves 4–3 in 11 innings at Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium, closing the Series in six games. A championship usually associated with American cities now belonged to Toronto.
The deciding game demanded an extra escape. Toronto held a 2–1 lead entering the bottom of the ninth, but Atlanta scored to keep its season alive. What could have been a nine-inning clincher became a game in which both teams had to rebuild a winning opportunity after the expected ending disappeared.
Dave Winfield created Toronto's opening in the 11th. With two outs, he drove a double down the third-base line against Charlie Leibrandt. Devon White and Roberto Alomar scored, putting the Blue Jays ahead 4–2. The hit supplied the margin, but two additional runs did not make the bottom of the inning automatic.
Atlanta scored once more and threatened to extend the game. Mike Timlin ultimately fielded Otis Nixon's bunt and threw to Joe Carter at first for the final out. The sequence turned a narrow lead into a completed championship. Toronto's earlier advantage and its late double mattered only after that last play was secured.
The significance reaches beyond a single dramatic finish. The Blue Jays had been building toward October success, and this victory converted a first World Series appearance into a title. It established that baseball's championship could be won north of the border within the same major-league competition. Its decisive plays remain part of Toronto's first title, with the final bunt out confirming that a championship could be won far from the sport's traditional centers.
