On June 19, 2016, the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors 93–89 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, earning the first championship in franchise history. Cleveland had trailed the series 3–1, so the final win completed a comeback that no team had previously made in the Finals. The deciding game took place at Oracle Arena in Oakland, where the Cavaliers held off the defending champions in a tense finish.
The game turned on a pair of late defensive and offensive plays. With the score tied in the closing minutes, LeBron James chased down Andre Iguodala and blocked his layup attempt, preserving the tie. Moments later, Kyrie Irving hit a three-pointer over Stephen Curry to put Cleveland ahead with 53 seconds remaining. The Warriors had one more chance, but Cleveland’s defense kept them from reclaiming the lead.
James led the Cavaliers with 27 points, and he was named Finals MVP. His performance across the series was central to the comeback, alongside Irving’s scoring and the team’s collective defense. The title also carried meaning for the city: it ended a 52-year wait for a major professional sports championship, dating to the Browns’ 1964 NFL title.
Fans remember the 2016 championship for the scale of the comeback and the defining moments under pressure. Cleveland became the first team to recover from a 3–1 deficit in the NBA Finals, and the win delivered the franchise’s long-sought first title. For Cavaliers supporters, the last seconds in Oakland transformed years of frustration into a championship celebration that remains one of the defining finishes in league history.
