The Texas Rangers made one of the more intriguing moves of deadline week Thursday, acquiring catcher Logan O’Hoppe and right-handed reliever Chase Silseth from the Los Angeles Angels for minor league infielder Angel Arredondo. It is a two-player bet on upside, depth and immediate bullpen help with the postseason race tightening.
Silseth is the clearest short-term addition. The 26-year-old has posted a 2.72 ERA across 47 relief appearances this season, striking out 10.9 batters per nine innings and allowing only three home runs. He also has not given up an earned run over his last seven appearances, giving Texas a live arm for the middle and late innings. )
O’Hoppe brings a different kind of value. He has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock, but Texas now controls a 26-year-old catcher with five seasons of major league experience and a strong track record of handling a heavy workload. He made 68 starts behind the plate for Los Angeles this year and has been one of the American League’s busier catchers since 2024. )
- ⚾ Texas adds a proven catching option without immediately forcing him onto the active roster.
- 🔥 Silseth joins the active roster and strengthens a bullpen that needs dependable innings.
- 📈 Arredondo, 19, was hitting .247 with eight homers and a .769 OPS in Single-A before the deal.
The Angels get a young infielder with room to grow, while the Rangers get two major league pieces for one developing prospect. That makes this more than a depth move: Texas is trying to improve its present roster without completely emptying the farm system.
