College basketball is quietly testing what a summer schedule could look like, and the Bahamas might be the first real preview. A multi-team event running from July 31 through August 5 has several Division I programs playing exhibition games against international competition while coaches get extra practices and live-game evaluations.
That matters because the NCAA is also moving toward more flexibility for preseason competition. A proposed framework would allow Division I teams to play multiple scrimmages or exhibition games against four-year schools during the 2026-27 academic year. Put those pieces together, and the current Bahamas event starts to feel less like a one-off trip and more like a potential proof of concept.
- ✅ Known: Multiple Division I programs are playing organized summer exhibitions in a tournament-style setting.
- 🗣️ Reported: NCAA basketball leaders have been discussing expanded exhibition opportunities and ways to create more exposure outside the traditional season.
- 👀 Speculation: A successful turnout could push the NCAA toward a broader summer hoops window, with high-major programs meeting in neutral-site events before football season fully takes over.
The biggest question is whether fans would actually show up for meaningful August basketball. If the atmosphere, streaming numbers and player-development benefits are strong, coaches will have a pretty convincing argument. Nobody is calling this a new season yet, but the line between offseason exhibition and real college basketball is getting thinner by the day.
