The USC–Notre Dame rivalry is coming back, but college football fans will have to wait until 2030 to hear the Jeweled Shillelagh argument again. The schools agreed to a four-game home-and-home series beginning with a Week 1 meeting at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 2030, followed by a Week 1 return trip to South Bend in 2031.
That is the good news. The uncomfortable part is what the announcement says about the sport’s modern scheduling reality. One of college football’s most recognizable annual matchups is no longer anchored to October or Thanksgiving weekend. It has been moved to the front of the calendar, where travel, conference schedules and playoff positioning can be managed more cleanly.
For USC, the early-season placement solves a major Big Ten scheduling problem. The Trojans can play Notre Dame before the grind of conference play fully takes over. For the Irish, it restores a national showcase without forcing the game into the final weeks of an increasingly crowded schedule. Both programs get a marquee television window, but fans lose the familiar buildup that made this rivalry feel like a season-ending event.
That tradeoff will fuel the debate. Is preserving the matchup in any time slot better than losing it altogether, or does moving it to Week 1 turn a historic tradition into another made-for-TV opener?
