The NBA just gave its international talent pipeline a serious jolt: six current or former NBA figures will coach 80 high-school-age prospects at the inaugural Basketball Without Borders Next Up camp in Istanbul from Aug. 26-29. This is not a loose summer run. The format packs athletic testing, movement work, skill stations, 3-on-3, 5-on-5 and life-skills sessions into four days. )
The lineup is built for real basketball arguments. Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson brings an NBA bench’s eye. Vlade Divac brings NBA legend status and a European development perspective. Danilo Gallinari and 2021 champion Brook Lopez add veteran frontcourt knowledge, while three-time All-Star Khris Middleton and Orlando’s Jalen Suggs bring championship-level perimeter lessons. The camper roster and additional coaches are still to come. )
That mix is the hook. A prospect can be tested by a coach focused on spacing and decisions, then learn from players who spent years solving playoff possessions. The NBA and FIBA say the top performers from the two annual Next Up camps will be selected for BWB All-Star camps connected to future NBA and WNBA All-Star events. )
The track record makes this more than a nice-looking announcement. Since 2001, Basketball Without Borders has reached more than 4,900 participants from 149 countries and territories, with 155 former campers advancing to the NBA or WNBA. Recent alumni include Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, Pascal Siakam and Deni Avdija. )
So watch Istanbul closely. The next international breakout may not arrive with a viral dunk or a lottery-pick label.
