The Vikings just locked in their quarterback. Coach Kevin O'Connell named Kyler Murray the starter Tuesday after he beat out J.J. McCarthy in a spring-to-camp showdown.
O'Connell sat down with both guys that morning, then told the whole team. Murray, who turned 29 last Friday, signed a one-year deal in March right after Arizona cut him loose. The former No. 1 pick showed he still has it through those first 10 days of padded practices.
He brings 87 starts, 20,460 passing yards, 121 touchdowns and 3,193 rushing yards. That dual-threat juice is exactly what this offense needs. O'Connell loved how Murray soaked up the system and pushed everyone in that quarterbacks room.
McCarthy, the 2024 first-rounder, put in the work and showed growth after a injury-plagued 10-start season last year. The coach made it plain this doesn't knock the kid down a peg. He's still a huge piece of the future and will keep getting plenty of reps.
Murray now owns the first-team snaps heading into preseason. Picture him slicing up that Brian Flores defense with his legs and arm, building timing with the skill guys. Vikings fans are already fired up wondering if this is the spark that gets them rolling in the NFC North.
