Brandon Lowe has made his part easy: if Pittsburgh wants him back, he’ll listen. The harder question is whether the Pirates will turn that open door into a real offer before their biggest bat reaches free agency.
Lowe told Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Colin Beazley he’s willing to talk about returning, praising the young group and the baseball ahead at PNC Park. Pittsburgh is also reportedly interested in bringing him back. But there’s an important gap between that mutual openness and actual negotiations: Lowe said the club hadn’t approached him about an in-season deal.
The timing matters. Lowe’s career year has given the Pirates exactly what they hoped for when they acquired him from Tampa Bay last winter: middle-of-the-order punch. Through Monday, Sept. 21, he had 33 homers and 93 RBIs, leading the club in both categories. For a team trying to build around a young core, replacing that production is no small chore.
Still, interest is not a contract, and a good fit doesn’t settle the dollars or the years. Lowe is headed toward his first free-agency test after signing an early-career extension with the Rays. Pittsburgh has to decide whether it wants to compete for his next deal—or let the market set the price and hope another answer emerges.
For now, there’s no reported agreement and no sign talks have advanced. The useful signal is simpler: Lowe hasn’t shut the door. The offseason will show whether the Pirates are ready to walk through it.
