The New York Giants have lost quarterback Jaxson Dart for the rest of the 2026 regular season, a major blow to the team’s plans just two games into the year. New York placed Dart on injured reserve Thursday, Sept. 24, after head coach John Harbaugh confirmed he would miss the regular-season remainder.
Dart injured his left knee on the opening drive of Monday’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was hit by two defenders on a pass attempt, left the game and did not return. NFL Network reported he is expected to undergo season-ending surgery. The Giants have not announced a specific recovery timetable, and Harbaugh said a possible postseason return would depend on how recovery goes.
Jameis Winston will take over as the starter, beginning with Sunday’s home game against Tennessee. Harbaugh said the Giants will shape the game plan around Winston’s strengths. The veteran has appeared in 109 regular-season games, including 89 starts, but this is a sudden change for an offense built around Dart’s early-season momentum.
Dart opened the season with a 28-20 win over Dallas and became the first quarterback to start a season with at least three passing touchdowns, 50 rushing yards and a passer rating of 130, according to the team. New York now has to move forward without its young starter for the remainder of the regular season, while Winston gets the immediate opportunity to steady the offense. The Giants are scheduled to host the Titans on Sept. 27.
