Mahomes, Butker Rescue Chiefs in Overtime Thriller vs. Colts

Mahomes, Butker Rescue Chiefs in Overtime Thriller vs. Colts

Arrowhead got the ending it wanted, even if Kansas City made everyone wait for it. Harrison Butker drilled a 40-yard field goal as time expired in overtime, lifting the Chiefs past the Indianapolis Colts 33-30 Sunday night and sending Kansas City to 2-0.

Patrick Mahomes was the engine throughout, throwing for 382 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. But the winning drive belonged to the quarterback’s legs, Kenneth Walker III’s burst and Butker’s right foot. Mahomes scrambled for 13 yards, Walker ripped off important runs, and the Chiefs quarterback then found Walker on a deep completion that pushed Kansas City into scoring range. Butker finished the job.

The Colts had their chances. Jonathan Taylor ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns, including a 24-yard sprint that put Indianapolis ahead 20-17 at halftime. Daniel Jones added 210 passing yards and a touchdown, while Tyler Warren found the end zone through the air. Indianapolis also survived a wild overtime moment when a replay review overturned what initially appeared to be a game-ending fumble.

That reprieve gave the Colts the ball back, but Indianapolis settled for a field goal instead of chasing a winning touchdown. Mahomes answered with the kind of late-game sequence Kansas City has built its reputation on: pressure, movement and just enough creation to put the kicker in position.

The Chiefs leave Week 2 unbeaten and looking dangerous. The Colts leave 0-2, knowing they pushed one of the AFC’s heavyweights to the edge—and let it escape.
