Could Carolina’s second Sanders scratch revive trade calls?

Could Carolina’s second Sanders scratch revive trade calls?

Two Sundays on the inactive list have made Ja'Tavion Sanders' place in Carolina's tight end room harder to ignore—and revived the question of whether the Panthers could hear from trade suitors again. The key distinction: trade discussions involving Sanders were reported before roster cuts; there is no fresh report that Carolina is negotiating a deal now.

Joseph Person of The Athletic reported, citing a league source, that Carolina discussed Sanders with other teams before the Aug. 30 cutdown. The Panthers kept him on their initial 53-man roster, one of five tight ends. Then they dressed Tommy Tremble, Mitchell Evans, Darren Waller and Feleipe Franks while listing Sanders inactive against Chicago on Sept. 13 and Atlanta on Sept. 20. The pattern is now two games, not a one-week roster squeeze.

That does not establish that Carolina is shopping the 2024 fourth-rounder, or that a team has made a new offer. It does give clubs seeking tight end help a reason to recheck: Sanders is 23 and remains under contract through 2027, while two consecutive healthy scratches leave his game-day path crowded. The trade deadline is Nov. 10, and injuries can quickly change what another club needs.

Carolina could still prefer to keep its depth and wait for injuries or performance to reshuffle the room. A modest return may not beat the value of holding on; on the other hand, if Sanders stays inactive, another team could ask whether the Panthers would convert a blocked role into draft capital. For now, that is a possible next conversation—not a reported bid or an imminent trade. Sanders' status for Sunday's Week 3 game against Cleveland is the next public clue.
