Hershey Test Puts Flyers’ New Attack Against Caps’ Depth

HERSHEY, Pa. — Monday’s Flyers-Capitals preseason meeting at Giant Center carries more weight than the exhibition label suggests. Washington is coming off a 3-2 shootout loss in Boston on Sunday, while Philadelphia opens its four-game slate in a building that doubles as the Capitals’ most important development home. With the NHL’s regular season expanding to 84 games and the preseason shrinking, every useful shift is suddenly harder to replace.

Washington already showed a serious mix in Boston, dressing roughly half of its projected top dozen forwards and four of its top-six defensemen. The question in Hershey is how much more Spencer Carbery wants from that group after a back-to-back start. Alex Ovechkin is back for his 22nd season, and the Capitals’ revamped forward depth — highlighted by Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch and Boone Jenner — gives the coaching staff plenty to sort out without treating one September result as a verdict.

Philadelphia enters with a different kind of intrigue. Trevor Zegras is coming off a career-best 26-goal, 67-point season and has embraced a center-wing hybrid role under Rick Tocchet. He scored in the Flyers’ weekend scrimmage, but prospects Alex Bump, Oliver Bonk and Denver Barkey also found the net, creating a useful early test of which young players can force their way into the conversation.

The Hershey setting adds another layer. Washington’s 21-year affiliation with the Bears has produced five Calder Cups during the partnership, and the local crowd will be watching for the next wave as much as the NHL regulars.

Watch the pace, special teams and workload management. Philadelphia has fresh legs; Washington has one game of information. The better question may be which team turns limited ice time into a clearer opening-night plan.
