Oregon has an interim coach, a new-look roster and almost no runway before the season starts. Dana Altman retired effective Oct. 7, 26 days before the Ducks’ opener, leaving longtime assistant Tony Stubblefield to lead the team for 2026-27.
Altman, 68, leaves as Oregon’s winningest coach after 16 seasons, 382 victories and a 2017 Final Four run. He said health and a lack of energy to lead the team to his own standard factored into his decision. Oregon will conduct a national search for a permanent replacement after the season.
The players did not see the announcement coming. Oregon forward Andrew Meadow described it as a shock at Big Ten media day, while Stubblefield said he began contacting players’ families and representatives as the program worked through the transition. Stubblefield spent much of Altman’s tenure on the Ducks’ staff and led DePaul from 2021 to 2024.
The timing also puts NCAA transfer rules in focus. Under the Division I coaching-change policy, a 15-day transfer window can begin five days after a new head coach is announced; if a permanent head coach is not announced within 30 days of the previous coach’s departure, the window begins on day 31. With Stubblefield named interim, reports project Oregon’s coaching-change window to begin Nov. 7, 31 days after Altman’s retirement.
That would put Oregon’s Nov. 2 season opener against Montana and its Nov. 6 game against Eastern Washington ahead of the expected window. The schedule gives Stubblefield two regular-season tests before players can use that coaching-change exception. The public record does not establish that Altman timed his retirement around portal access; the immediate question is how the Ducks navigate the season’s opening stretch while a permanent coaching search waits.
