Could SEC Restore a Sit-Out Rule for In-Conference Hoops Transfers?

Could SEC Restore a Sit-Out Rule for In-Conference Hoops Transfers?

The SEC may be weighing a transfer rule that would make one familiar roster-building route far less direct: moving from one league school to another. The proposal is still only under discussion, but if it advances, basketball coaches could lose the option of adding an SEC rival’s transfer for immediate help.

Reports on Thursday, October 8, said SEC presidents would meet the following week to consider restoring a year-in-residence requirement for athletes transferring within the conference. The league removed its intraconference sit-out rule in 2021, allowing those transfers immediate eligibility. No decision has been reported, and the details—including timing and possible exceptions—remain unclear.

For SEC basketball staffs, the change would redraw the portal map rather than close it. A coach trying to replace a departing starter might have to look outside the conference, while a player seeking a fresh start could find an SEC destination comes with a season on the sideline. That could push more movement toward other leagues, even as the proposal aims to discourage teams from raiding one another.

There’s a competitive wrinkle, too: one SEC school source told On3 that restoring the restriction could leave league programs less able to add talent from within the conference. And any adopted sit-out policy would enter a landscape where transfer restrictions have faced legal challenges. For now, the key signal is the meeting—not a rule change. Coaches can start gaming out the consequences, but nobody should treat this as settled roster math.
