Missouri Exposed Florida’s Run-First Plan, Then Pulled Away

Florida’s 52-28 demolition of Ole Miss made the Gators feel like an offense with an answer for everything. Missouri’s 45-17 win was a reminder that one answer can be enough: take away the run, then make the quarterback prove he can carry the whole menu. At 10-10 late in the second quarter, this was still a game. The Tigers’ next stretch turned it into a schematic warning label for Florida’s identity—not a verdict on the season, but a clear challenge for the next opponent to copy.

The blueprint began in the trenches, not with some exotic coverage. Missouri crowded the tackle box and kept Jadan Baugh from getting downhill: the back finished with 13 yards on 12 carries, and Florida averaged just 1.7 yards per rush. That matters because the Gators had arrived leaning on the ground game to keep Aaron Philo out of obvious passing situations. Missouri’s 11 tackles for loss and three sacks didn’t just win collisions; they made Florida’s next call predictable and put the quarterback in long-yardage.

Florida briefly answered, but Missouri won the pivot snap: with a 10-3 lead, the Tigers stuffed the Gators on fourth-and-short at Florida’s 35. Florida later tied it, 10-10, and Missouri immediately answered with Austin Simmons’ 31-yard touchdown to Caleb Goodie; Simmons had already hit a 47-yard score. Those weren’t just splash plays. They punished a secondary already missing safety Bryce Thornton and forced Florida to defend the full width and depth of the field while its front was busy accounting for the run.

Simmons completed 23 of 30 passes for 340 yards, and the Independent Florida Alligator reported he completed 11 straight throws, nine traveling at least 10 yards. That’s the part that made Missouri’s plan complementary: the defense erased Florida’s preferred run game, while the offense kept Florida’s defense from simply selling out to stop Jamal Roberts. The Gators had to respect Simmons’ timing and downfield accuracy, even as Roberts waited for the ground game to break open. Missouri kept making Florida defend every blade of grass.

Roberts’ eruption showed how quickly a close game can become a rout. After 45 yards on his first 18 carries, he broke runs of 77 and 80 yards as Missouri pulled away. Those two plays aren’t proof that the Tigers won every snap up front; they are proof that Florida couldn’t recover once its fits and tackling slipped. Missouri scored 35 unanswered points after the tie, turning one fourth-down stop and a couple of explosive plays into a tidal wave. That’s a Saturday afternoon plan executed with patience, not magic.

For Florida, the fix isn’t to shelve Baugh after one awful afternoon. It’s to make a loaded box pay: quick throws into the space defenders vacate, screens, and play-action that gives Philo easier answers before the pass rush arrives. Missouri showed that the Gators’ run game can be contained; the passing game must make that choice costly. The Ole Miss win still counts, and one road loss doesn’t define a first-year team. But the question for the staff now is practical: can Florida build a counter before opponents turn Missouri’s blueprint into the weekly tailgate talk?
