South Carolina’s latest collapse intensified the questions around Shane Beamer—but the newest report points to a less dramatic possibility: the Gamecocks may stick with him because a change would be so expensive.
After South Carolina surrendered a 17-point lead and lost to Kentucky, 35-34 in overtime on Oct. 3, CBS Sports reported that people close to the program expect Beamer to remain in place for now, with the possibility he could return in 2027. That is a report about the school’s thinking, not an announcement from the university or a guarantee of Beamer’s future.
The cost is central to the calculation. CBS cited a roughly $24 million buyout for Beamer, additional obligations to his staff and the expense of building a replacement staff. The State has also reported that the athletic department receives substantial institutional support, making the financial backdrop part of any decision—not just the football record.
The timing is notable because the pregame noise was pointing the other way. On3’s Pete Nakos reported before the Kentucky game that a loss could make Beamer’s position especially difficult. Beamer’s own postgame message offered no suggestion that results no longer matter: he acknowledged the team must win games.
So the immediate question may be less “Is a search underway?” than “Can South Carolina justify the price of change before the season ends?” The reports cited here do not confirm a formal search or a decision to retain Beamer through 2027. Florida, next on the schedule, gives the Gamecocks a near-term chance to change the conversation—but another loss would sharpen the tension between performance and the buyout math.
