Cleveland turned a 2-0 series hole into one last game at home. The Guardians and White Sox meet Saturday night in a winner-take-all Game 5, with a trip to the American League Championship Series—and a matchup with Tampa Bay—on the line.
The comeback has been powered by a suddenly alive Cleveland lineup. After scoring nine runs in Wednesday’s Game 3, the Guardians answered a 4-3 deficit Thursday with six runs in the sixth. Travis Bazzana tied it with a double, Patrick Bailey put Cleveland ahead, and José Ramírez and Jo Adell helped stretch the lead. The 9-5 win means the club has scored 18 runs across two elimination games.
Now comes the unusual pitching question. Gavin Williams, Cleveland’s planned starter, needed 18 pitches to record the final three outs Thursday after closer Cade Smith was pulled in the ninth. Williams gets the ball again Saturday, with manager Stephen Vogt facing a delicate balance: trust his top starter to carry the biggest game of the season, while accounting for his brief relief outing just two days earlier.
Chicago counters with Sean Burke and a bullpen that has been central to its October run—but was heavily tested in the last two games. Grant Taylor, so effective earlier in the series, could not record an out during Cleveland’s sixth-inning surge. The White Sox still have the advantage of a roster that led the series 2-0, but must find a way to contain the Guardians’ revived offense and get more length from their pitching plan.
Both teams have already won on the road in this series; the deciding game shifts back to Progressive Field. Cleveland has the momentum and home crowd. Chicago has one more chance to finish the job. Neither team needs a broader October narrative now: nine innings decide who keeps playing.
