Nikishin’s Trade Door Is Open—But Is Anyone Ready to Pay?

Nikishin’s Trade Door Is Open—But Is Anyone Ready to Pay?

Carolina has allowed Alexander Nikishin’s camp to speak with other teams, but that is a starting point—not a trade agreement. The defending champions still face a three-part puzzle: find a return they can accept, get Nikishin signed, and persuade the player to join the destination club.

The 24-year-old defenseman remains unsigned after a 33-point rookie season and a Stanley Cup run. Pierre LeBrun reported that Nikishin’s trade request remained in place as camp approached. Then Elliotte Friedman reported that Carolina had given his camp permission to talk with other teams. That opens a door, but it does not mean the Hurricanes have authorized a deal or that a suitable bidder is ready.

Carolina GM Eric Tulsky has publicly said both sides are trying to find a resolution. That matters: the club has not framed a trade as its only way out. Nikishin is a restricted free agent, so any acquiring team would need confidence it can reach contract terms—not simply assemble an attractive package of picks and prospects.

There is a real asset-value dilemma here. Carolina can’t treat a young, NHL-proven defenseman as a distressed sale, while interested clubs must price in the contract uncertainty and the cost of surrendering useful roster pieces. Los Angeles has been discussed as a possible fit, and a local report has explored what a Kings package might require, but that is not confirmation of an active offer. Until a bidder clears both the trade price and the signing hurdle, the likeliest next step may still be more calls—not a departure from Raleigh.
