Pavel Zacha’s Contract Stalemate: Is Boston’s Trade Clock Ticking?

Pavel Zacha’s Contract Stalemate: Is Boston’s Trade Clock Ticking?

Boston may want Pavel Zacha back, but an unresolved contract conversation is putting a trade question on the table. The Bruins’ center is being watched around the league as the 2026-27 season gets underway—not because a deal is reported to be imminent, but because his next contract remains unsettled.

Zacha enters the final year of a four-year deal with a $4.75 million cap hit and is due to become an unrestricted free agent in July 2027. He is coming off a career-best season, with 30 goals and 65 points in 2025-26, giving Boston a strong reason to keep him—and rival clubs a reason to pay attention.

There have been extension discussions, but the sides reportedly have not found common ground on the salary. Boston general manager Don Sweeney has said the club wants to retain Zacha. That leaves the Bruins balancing a familiar calculation: what it would take to keep a productive center, against the risk of letting a valuable asset move closer to free agency without a deal.

Nick Kypreos has identified Nashville, Columbus, Philadelphia and Montreal as teams monitoring the situation. Monitoring is not the same as making an offer, and there is no confirmed trade negotiation with any of those clubs. For now, the report points to a market keeping tabs—not a bidding war.

If the gap remains open, Zacha could become a more serious trade candidate as the season develops. But Boston has reason to wait: a strong start from the team, or progress at the negotiating table, could change the equation. The central question is whether the Bruins can settle on a number before outside interest turns into something more concrete.
