Roberto Clemente made right field a place where a game could change in an instant. Born in Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18, 1934, he combined a powerful throwing arm with range, contact hitting and a determination to be understood on his own terms. His place in baseball history reaches beyond any one of those qualities.

Clemente entered professional baseball in Puerto Rico, spent time in the Dodgers organization and reached Pittsburgh through the Rule 5 draft before the 1955 season. His early major league years involved injuries and the challenges of playing in an unfamiliar environment. The Pirates eventually became the home of his entire major league career.

By 1960, Clemente was an important part of a Pittsburgh team that defeated the Yankees in the World Series. His development continued through batting titles and outstanding defense. Runners had to account for the accuracy and force of his throws, making his presence relevant even when the ball had not yet reached him.

The 1971 World Series provided a national stage for his complete game. Clemente excelled against Baltimore and earned the Series MVP award as Pittsburgh won another championship. The performance gave a wider audience a clear view of a player whose daily excellence had already become familiar to National League opponents.

Clemente also challenged the treatment of Latino players and used his standing to help others. His charitable work reflected a belief that prominence created responsibility. After an earthquake struck Nicaragua in 1972, he became involved in relief efforts and boarded a flight carrying supplies. The plane crashed on December 31, killing him.

Earlier that year, Clemente had reached 3,000 career hits. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1973 after waiving the usual waiting period. His lasting importance joins the sporting and human sides of his life: he expanded expectations for an outfielder, gave Puerto Rican baseball a towering representative and showed how an athlete's influence could serve people far beyond the stands.
