Detroit gets the stronger foundation on the mound and at home. Framber Valdez’s season ERA is 4.06, but his recent four-start sample is much better: a 2.25 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP. The Tigers’ overall staff has also been markedly stingier, with a 3.64 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, and their home pitching ERA is 3.29. Washington can certainly score: it averages 5.08 runs per game and carries meaningful power, led by CJ Abrams’ 33 homers. But the Nationals’ recent relief work has been a vulnerability, with a 6.58 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over the last 28 days. Washington did win Tuesday’s meeting 3-1, so this is not a runaway; still, Detroit’s pitching and home setting give it the more persuasive full-game case.
