The American League Division Series moves to the Bronx with Tampa Bay one win from moving on and New York needing a response immediately. The Rays lead 2-0 after taking the first two games at home; Game 3 is set for Wednesday, October 7, at 8 p.m. ET. Suddenly, the Yankees’ season rests on a single night.
Tampa’s edge has come from two very different-looking wins. In Game 1, Drew Rasmussen carried a no-hit bid into the eighth as the Rays shut out New York, 1-0. A night later, the Yankees scored twice—but four errors helped Tampa turn a 5-2 victory into a commanding series lead.
That makes the first challenge for New York as clear as the stakes: give its pitchers a clean defense to work behind. The miscues in Game 2 helped produce three unearned runs, and another night of free outs could leave little room for the offense to catch up. At home, the Yankees need their routine plays to become routine again.
Max Fried gets the ball for the must-win start, facing Tampa Bay right-hander Nick Martínez. Martínez finished the regular season 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA; Fried posted a 2.80 ERA and a 5-5 record. Martínez enters after a year of career highs in innings and the lowest walk rate among qualified pitchers, while Fried must give New York a chance to extend the series.
The Rays can advance with one more victory. The Yankees, meanwhile, have to solve Tampa’s pitching and pressure game before the series slips away. A win would bring them back into the matchup; a loss would end their October. For a team that has made only five errors feel decisive, every pitch and every ground ball now carries extra weight.
