Yankees' Adley Rutschman Bid Hinged on Yostin Peña?

Yankees' Adley Rutschman Bid Hinged on Yostin Peña?

Adley Rutschman might have landed in the Bronx instead of Boston—but a newly surfaced account says one young Yankees outfielder became a major obstacle. Baltimore reportedly wanted a four-player package from New York before sending the three-time All-Star to its division rival at the August deadline.

Jon Heyman reported that the Orioles’ asking package included catcher Austin Wells, pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez, outfield prospect Yostin Peña, and either Will Warren or Ryan Weathers. Peña’s inclusion was described as a sticking point. The reported terms show how steep the price was, but they don’t establish whether Baltimore’s request was its final position or how far the clubs got in working through alternatives.

Boston ultimately acquired Rutschman and catcher Jake Rogers, while Baltimore received several prospects, catcher Carlos Narváez and additional consideration. Rutschman remained under team control through 2027, giving the Orioles a valuable asset to move—and giving any interested club more than a short-term rental.

For New York, the debate is less about a deal still being alive than what the Yankees were willing to surrender for a major upgrade behind the plate. Wells, Warren and Weathers stayed in the organization; Peña remains a prospect the club did not include. That makes the reported offer an intriguing snapshot of a deadline negotiation, not proof the Yankees were one tweak away from getting Rutschman. The unresolved question is whether Baltimore’s asking price was simply too rich—or whether New York will revisit the catching market with a different target this winter.
