Chicago struck first, absorbed Vancouver’s push, then found the final answer late. The Fire beat the Western Conference-leading Whitecaps 3-1 at Soldier Field on Tuesday, October 6, moving into fourth place in the East with 45 points.
Jonathan Bamba set the tone in the ninth minute, cutting inside before driving a shot into the corner. Chicago had a chance to widen the gap before halftime, but Philip Zinckernagel’s penalty hit the post. The missed opportunity kept Vancouver within reach—and made the Fire’s next breakthrough matter.
Five minutes into the second half, Zinckernagel finished a quick give-and-go with Maren Haile-Selassie to make it 2-0. Vancouver did not fold. Mathías Laborda rose to head home an Oliver Larraz corner in the 73rd minute, pulling the visitors back into a one-goal game and putting pressure on Chicago’s closing stretch.
The Fire’s response came through the substitute who helped change the mood. Robert Lewandowski entered in the 76th minute, and in the 88th, Johan Gómez’s backheel released him into the box. Lewandowski drew the defense and squared the ball for Haile-Selassie, who finished to restore the two-goal cushion. The late goal turned a tense finish into a celebration.
Chicago finished with a 21-14 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on target to Vancouver’s two. The result was the Fire’s second straight league win and lifted them past Charlotte into fourth in the East. Vancouver remained atop the West on 50 points, three clear of the teams behind it, with seven regular-season matches left.
For Chicago, the win was more than a strong night against a conference leader: it turned a postponed fixture into ground gained in the Eastern race. The Fire now stay home to face New York City FC on October 10. Vancouver’s road stretch continues at LAFC that same day.
