Seattle’s comeback arrived in two very different bursts: a halftime substitute steadied the Sounders, then a deflection in the 90th minute turned a tense draw into a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City on Thursday, October 1.
Sporting struck first in the 44th minute after Stephen Afrifa disrupted Seattle’s attempt to play out from the back. The loose ball reached André Luiz, who finished from inside the area. It was Luiz’s fifth goal in as many MLS starts, and the visitors carried their lead into halftime.
Seattle’s answer came almost immediately after the break. Sebastian Gomez entered for Danny Musovski at halftime, and Jordan Morris helped make the change count. After meeting a long ball and battling into the box, Morris laid it back for Gomez, who scored his first MLS goal in the 51st minute. The Sounders had their foothold; Sporting still had chances to pull away.
Goalkeeper Andrew Thomas kept Seattle level through a busy night, finishing with nine saves. A late stop helped set up the decisive counter: Morris sent Cristian Roldan toward goal, and defender Wyatt Meyer’s sliding intervention sent the ball off Roldan and into the net. The goal was credited to the Sounders captain, even if it was hardly a clean finish.
The result gave Seattle a third straight win and extended its unbeaten run to eight games. The Sounders moved to seventh in the Western Conference with 38 points, while completing a three-win homestand. For Sporting, the late loss made a strong road effort—22 shots, including 11 on target—count for nothing.
There is plenty for Seattle to celebrate, especially Gomez’s timely impact and Morris’s involvement in both goals. But a comeback does not erase the concern: Sporting found space and tested Thomas repeatedly. The Sounders leave with the points; whether their late resilience can keep covering defensive lapses is the question their next match will carry.
