Judge Slams Door on NFL Comebacks as College Football Camp Opens

The college football eligibility fight took a sharp turn Sunday, just as teams were moving into preseason-camp mode. U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney clarified that her Friday ruling granting another season to certain athletes does not allow football players who signed professional contracts this summer to return to college.

The original decision covered athletes who graduated high school in 2022 and were left outside the NCAA’s new “five for five” eligibility model. That ruling briefly created a path for hundreds of athletes to seek another season, including players connected to NFL and CFL rosters who were reportedly open to a return. The clarification closes that door for players who signed pro contracts, while leaving the broader eligibility ruling in place. )

That distinction matters immediately for football. Programs are already making roster decisions, setting depth charts and preparing for the 2026 season. Sweeney also said the order does not change NCAA rules governing professional contracts, transfer-portal entry windows or the roster and payment limits tied to the House settlement. )

  • 🏈 Players who signed pro contracts cannot use the ruling as a return ticket.
  • 📋 The broader fifth-year opportunity remains in place for eligible athletes.
  • ⚖️ The NCAA is expected to appeal, leaving teams to weigh risk before adding anyone.

For fans, the biggest question is no longer whether veteran stars can flood back into the sport. It is whether college football can operate normally while eligibility rules change in real time. With camp opening and the season approaching, one court order has already forced every roster manager to check the fine print twice. )
