Peralta is a rental, set to become a free agent after the season, and that is the obvious risk. His Mets tenure also came with red flags. After posting a 3.10 ERA across his first nine starts, he went 2-6 with a 6.44 ERA over his next 13 outings. His fastball remains dangerous, but reduced extension has given hitters more time to react, leading to more hits, walks and a lower strikeout rate.
Still, this is exactly the kind of buy-low gamble Tampa Bay has mastered. Peralta’s track record is much stronger than his recent Mets numbers, and the Rays can ask him to lean on his fastball while working inside a pitching system that has already produced strong results.
